What is Workplace Harassment?

Workplace harassment is any unwelcome or unwanted conduct that shows a hostility or dislike of an individual based upon that individual’s protected characteristics.  Characteristics protected under Minnesota and federal law can include: race, color, gender, national origin, age, religion, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or gender identity.  Conduct is considered unwelcomed if the employee neither solicited it nor provoked it.

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Discrimination in Employment Act, the American with Disabilities Act and the Minnesota Human Rights Act all prohibit the workplace harassment of protected individuals.  Under these laws, an employer or boss can be held liable for allowing a hostile work environment to continue.

  • Homophobic slurs or inappropriate comments about your sexual orientation
